Bayern Munich clinched their 12th domestic double by beating RB Leipzig 3-0 in the German Cup final, just days after they were crowned champions of Germany for the seventh successive season with a crushing last-day victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Niko Kovac’s side, who trailed leaders Borussia Dortmund by nine points after 12 games, needed only a draw to secure a 29th Bundesliga title.

They finished two points ahead of Dortmund, who won 2-0 at Borussia Monchengladbach thanks to goals from England winger Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus.

It was fitting end to Bayern’s season as legends Robben and Ribery scored in what proved to be a procession to the title.

The pair had 22 Bundesliga seasons, 185 goals and 15 titles between them.

Lewandowski, the competition’s highest scorer this season with seven, also took his individual tally in German Cup finals to seven as Bayern won it for the 19th time in their history.

Die Bayern did suffer a disappointing exit in the Champions League at the quarter-final stage to Liverpool. After gaining a creditable 0-0 draw at Anfield in the first leg, Bayern delivered a tepid performance in front of their own fans at the Allianz Arena, losing 3-1 and exiting the Champions League with a whimper.

There has been an over-reliance on older players at the club in recent years and this almost cost the Bavarian side in the league this season. Despite this, Bayern will be pleased that they managed to fend off Dortmund’s Bundesliga title challenge even during a season in which they have been in transition and have attempted to integrate younger players into the team.
